VITA North America has announced that it is collaborating with key industry opinion leader Peter Pizzi to help develop and drive a number of new educational and product development initiatives. A prominent national and international ceramist and the co-editor-in-chief of Inside Dental Technology, Pizzi brings more than three decades of experience to work with VITA on the education and process components of its key technologies and materials.

“Only VITA is uniquely positioned to bring labs and doctors together with our VITA shade measurement technology, communication and reproduction,” said VITA North America President Matt O’Connell. “Our shared vision with Peter is to help dentists and lab technicians provide their patients with the best restorations possible. Using VITA’s unique technologies, we can help dentists and labs collaborate more effectively. We plan to demonstrate this through a number of new training and educational initiatives, as well as new technological advancements that bring dentists and labs closer together.”

Pizzi is known for his ardent support of educating laboratories and dentists on the best restorative options based on the need of the patient. “I have found that the best outcomes are the result of fully understanding the needs and desires of the patient and then combining the skill of the technician with the right technology and materials,” said Pizzi.

According to an in vitro study conducted by the University of Mainz, 28 percent of manual shades measured are inaccurate, and 51 percent are unreliable, leading to restoration remakes 30 percent of the time.
“When we ask doctors how many cases go back and forth between the laboratory and the doctor for shade changes and adjustments, they will tell you a lot,” says Pizzi. “We are trying to change that paradigm with VITA’s proven shade information and reproduction.”
